The process of selecting a data bundle in Kenya frequently involves a difficult trade off between cost, network speed, and geographic coverage. As digital dependency deepens and the cost of living increases, many users find themselves relying on multiple Subscriber Identity Module SIM cards to maximise the diverse offers available across different networks. This strategy allows Kenyans to secure the most advantageous rates for data, voice calls, and Short Message Service SMS deals.
Mobile Network Landscape and Operator Offers
The mobile market is dominated by Safaricom, which maintains a substantial 63.3 per cent market share. This strength is underpinned by its expansive 4G and 5G network coverage and the pervasive use of its mobile money platform, M-PESA. Airtel is positioned as a strong alternative, frequently offering competitively priced bundles and its Airtel Money service, though its mobile money market share remains below 10 per cent. Faiba appeals specifically to budget conscious data users, while Telkom continues to serve a smaller, loyal customer base. Safaricom and Airtel have deployed 5G services, with all major operators offering 4G.
The following sections provide a guide to the most competitive mobile data options available from each provider, ranging from daily bundles to comprehensive monthly and unlimited plans.
Safaricom
Safaricom offers Tunukiwa deals, which provide subscribers with personalised bundles for data, SMS, and voice calls. Since these are custom offers, they are not uniform across the customer base, but are tailored hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly based on individual usage patterns.

Telkom Kenya
Telkom Kenya has faced significant operational challenges, resulting in a substantial decline in its subscriber base, which fell by over 60 per cent from 3.4 million users in December 2019 to 1.5 million in March 2025. This decline has been linked to a protracted shareholder transition that hampered strategy and network investment. Disputes over unpaid debt with a tower operator led to the shutdown of hundreds of network towers, severely impacting coverage and service reliability. Quality of service assessments in mid 2023 reflected these issues, with Telkom scoring 65 per cent on key performance indicators, notably lower than Safaricom’s 90 per cent and Airtel’s 79 per cent. Despite these challenges, some users still value Telkom’s specific night bundles for scheduled tasks.
